Microsoft 365 Account Compromise Traced to Supplier Email

A customer reported an email that appeared to come from a colleague but did not read right. Yourdigitaltwin investigated the same evening and found the account had been taken over. The route in was a phishing email sent from a supplier's own compromised mailbox: an enquiry with no attachment, prompting the recipient to reply, followed by a message containing what looked like a shared document. The link led to a counterfeit Microsoft sign-in page and the password entered there was used the following day. The account was shut down within two hours of the report, hidden mailbox rules were removed, and every message sent during the period was traced. No customer conversation was interfered with and no money was lost. Multifactor authentication and Conditional Access have since been put in place so that a correct password is no longer enough on its own.
